The movie's script was impressively solid structurally, arguably offering the best storytelling of the original series.

Optimus Prime mattered to kids, who were told by The Transformers: The Movie that he and several other Autobots and Decepticons whose toys they owned had died. When they did, Bionic Six ended that same year, while the end of Filmation's BraveStarr in 1988 also marked the closing of its studio. Defenders of the Earth lasted from 1986-87, while two toy lines launched in 1986 for cartoons that didn't debut until 1987. While 1986's The Real Ghostbusters ran through 1991, the year of The Transformers: The Movie wasn't just a bloodbath for Autobots and Decepticons, as no less than seven cartoon tie-ins to toy lines like Filmation's Ghostbusters began and ended that same year. Voltron: Defender of the Universe and the two cartoon tie-ins to Kenner's Super Powers Collection toy line - 1984-85's Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show and 1985-86's The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians - spanned 1984-86. The next two years saw reasonably successful expansions of the market for cartoon-toy franchises, albeit with warning signs.
